Words Their Way . . . Spelling
Different kids need different things at different times.
This saying is the motto of the Fairview Third Grade Team. We value differentiation as a key part of our teaching philosophies.
*********************************
Our spelling curriculum has changed since we, as adults, have been in school. We are using Words Their Way now, a more individualized approach in teaching spelling which focuses on the patterns of spelling your child knows and can use consistently in practiced and unknown words. We'll be giving a spelling inventory at the beginning of the year to determine the spelling level of each child. Children will be given lists of words associated with patterns. Sorting the words is a common activity. You might see your child's words coming home to be sorted at home. We work on a new sort each week, and take a pattern check at the end of the week.
Phonics - Word Analysis
In addition, we'll be using the words each week from our reading selections to help us learn to spell patterns. This phonics-based use of spelling patterns is a very beneficial way to teach kids to spell.
The word analysis patterns are a part of the weekly reading quiz which is given on the last day of the week.
*******************
*Memorizing words each week to spell correctly on an end of the week test is actually the lowest form of assessment we can use with your child. We want to help your child learn to spell correctly in his/her writing and to carry the words we use in class into his/her daily writing.
*We hope this helps to clarify any confusion.
Please contact us if you have any other questions.
